The UIC Barcelona Master’s Degree Program in BioDigital Architecture was created in 2000 as a pioneering interdisciplinary international postgraduate program, the first that treated the subject of architecture from the biological and digital perspectives, and the first to provide systematic studios, workshops and seminars with the founders of digital organicism, the new cutting edge of the 21st century. Within the context of the Research Line on Genetic Architectures at the ESARQ, the School of Architecture of UIC Barcelona (Universitat Internacional de Catalunya), students will pay special attention to new cybernetic-digital and new ecologic-environmental architectural design as a way of developing biodigital architecture, emergence, genetic and generative concepts in the biological and digital worlds, biomimesis, biolearning, morphogenesis, etc. Students will also experiment with genetic-driven software, evolutionary processes, emerging systems, algorithms, parametrics, scripting, etc.

New technologies have given us new production possibilities (Data-Driven Production, CNC machines, 3D printers) that lead to new formulations of non-standard architecture based on genetic principles (variation, mutation, hybridization): New architecture for new possibilities.

In a pioneer, interdisciplinary and international environment, long demonstrated over two decades, more specifically, it can be mentioned the work in the research and teaching of architecture and computation, with concepts such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Ambient Intelligence (AmI), Deep Learning (DL), Evolutionary Computation (EC), Logistic Regression (LR), Machine Learning (ML), Muti-Agent Systems (MAS), Shape Grammars (SG), etc.

Descriptions

The specific formation objectives of the Title are mainly based on the application of new biological and digital techniques to architecture, of genetics to architecture, from two entries, the cybernetic-digital and the ecologic-environmental. Acquiring digital architecture knowledge understood from genetic principles from the most advanced experimental architecture.

The specific competences of this Master, that the student need to achieve until the end of his study, are:

Aptitude to elaborate architectural projects to satisfy the aesthetic requirements and also the requirements of advance digital technology, environmental, biological and genetic technology applied to architecture.
Capacity to work with advanced software applied to architecture, for example, with computing programs as 3DStudio+VRay, Rhino, RhinoCam, Grasshopper, Rhinoscript, Maya, TopMod, XFrog, TopSolid, etc., parametric programs, CAD/CAM, scripting and other digitally novelties that come every year.
Knowledge of the new possibilities of application of genetic in architecture, and also of the new biological and digital new techniques.
Capacity to reflect on the principles of the research and the methods of genetic and biology research applied to architecture, specially through digital tools.
Capacity to innovate in the development and application of ideas in a context of research in biodigital and genetic architecture.
Capacity to adequately organize research projects of biodigital and genetic architecture.
Skill to compose knowledge and be in front of the inner complexity of an interdisciplinary area as is informatics, biology, genetic and architecture.

The perspectives, opportunities and challenges that the knowledge of this Master involve are amazing. The most new digital technology with understandings from biology is the most advanced stage that exists in the architecture's world. Therefore, there is an unexplored working market where the open fields are unlimited.

El Máster en Arquitectura BioDigital de la UIC se creó el año 2000 como un programa de postgrado pionero, el primero en tratar sobre la arquitectura entendida desde puntos de vista biológicos y digitales, el primero en hacer converger de manera sistemática a los fundadores del organicismo digital, la nueva vanguardia del siglo XXI. Así, estando dentro del contexto de la Línea de Investigación “Arquitecturas Genéticas” de la ESARQ (la Escuela de Arquitectura de la UIC Barcelona, Universitat Internacional de Catalunya), se pone especial atención al nuevo proyectar cibernético-digital y ecológico-medioambiental, para desarrollar conceptos como genético y generativo, la idea de emergencia dentro del mundo natural y digital, biomímesis, bioaprendizaje, morfogénesis, etc. Experimentando con software de motor genético, procesos evolutivos, sistemas emergentes, algoritmos, con lo paramétrico, scripting, etc.

Las nuevas tecnologías nos han dado nuevas posibilidades de producción (Data-Driven Production, máquinas CNC de control numérico, impresoras 3D), que llevan a formulaciones de una nueva arquitectura non-standard, desde principios genéticos (variación, mutación, hibridación).

En un entorno pionero, internacional e interdisciplinar, demostrado largamente durante dos décadas, desde el año 2000, más específicamente se debe mencionar la investigación y la enseñanza de arquitectura y computación desde conceptos como Inteligencia Artificial (AI), Ambient Intelligence (AmI), Deep Learning (DL), Evolutionary Computation (EC), Logistic Regression (LR), Machine Learning (ML), Muti-Agent Systems (MAS), Shape Grammars (SG), entre otros.

Clases prácticas de formación de herramientas digitales como por ejemplo software generativo, software paramétrico-asociativo, scripting, herramientas de producción y mecanizado CAD-CAM, ligado al desarrollo de proyectos.

Genetic and Biodigital Architectural Design:
Estudios y talleres con tutorías personalizadas para el desarrollo de los respectivos proyectos e investigaciones.

Descripciones

Los objetivos formativos específicos del Título tratan de iniciarse en la aplicación de las nuevas técnicas biológicas y digitales a la arquitectura, de la genética a la arquitectura, desde dos accesos, el cibernético-digital y el ecológico-medioambiental. Tratan de formarse en la arquitectura digital entendida desde principios genéticos, en la arquitectura experimental más avanzada.

Entre las competencias específicas de la titulación, que el estudiante ha de tener asumidas al finalizar el estudio, se encuentran:

Aptitud para elaborar proyectos arquitectónicos que satisfagan a la vez las exigencias estéticas, las de tecnología digital avanzada, las de tecnología medioambiental, biológica y genética aplicada a la arquitectura.
Capacidad para trabajar con software avanzado aplicado a la arquitectura, como puede ser el de programas informáticos tales como 3DStudio+VRay, Rhino, RhinoCam, Grasshopper, Rhinoscript, Maya, TopMod, XFrog, TopSolid, etc., programas paramétricos, CAD/CAM, scripting y demás novedades digitales que surgen año a año.
Conocimiento de las nuevas posibilidades de aplicación de la genética a la arquitectura, así como de las nuevas técnicas biológicas y digitales.
Capacidad de reflexión sobre los principios de la investigación y los métodos de la investigación de la genética y de la biología aplicada a la arquitectura, especialmente mediante herramientas digitales.
Capacidad de innovar en el desarrollo y aplicación de ideas en un contexto de investigación de arquitectura biodigital y genética.
Capacidad de organizar adecuadamente proyectos de investigación de arquitectura biodigital y genética.
Habilidad para integrar conocimientos y hacer frente a la complejidad propia de un ámbito interdisciplinar como es la informática, la biología, la genética y la arquitectura.

Las perspectivas, las oportunidades y los retos que comportan los conocimientos de esta titulación son fascinantes. Por tanto, queda un mercado laboral inexplorado donde el campo abierto es inmenso.

In November and December of every year: students can do a voluntary online preliminary study that involves reading a specific list of books, articles and software manuals.

From January to June of every year: half-time daily onsite work program (10 a.m. to 14 p.m.) at the
