Neil Leach is an architect, curator and writer.
His research interests fall broadly into two fields, critical theory and digital design. In the field of critical theory, he has published a number of monographs and edited volumes, dealing largely with the impact of importing theoretical tools from critical theory into an architectural arena. These include Rethinking Architecture: A Reader in Cultural Theory (Routledge, 1997); The Anaesthetics of Architecture (MIT Press, 1999); Millennium Culture (Ellipsis, 1999); Architecture and Revolution: Contemporary Perspectives on Central and Eastern Europe (Routledge, 1999); The Hieroglyphics of Space: Reading and Experiencing the Modern Metropolis (Routledge, 2002), China (Map Office, 2004) and Camouflage (MIT Press, 2006). In the field of digital design, he has published a number of edited volumes, including Designing for a Digital World (Wiley, 2002), Digital Tectonics (Wiley, 2004) and Digital Cities (Wiley, 2009).
He has also been co-curator of the Fast Forward>> exhibition at the Architecture Biennial Beijing 2004, the Emerging Talents, Emerging Technologies exhibition at the Architecture Biennial Beijing 2006, and the (Im)material Processes: New Digital Techniques for Architectureexhibition at the Architecture Biennial Beijing 2008.
We will have the pleasure to attend Neil Leach seminar between monday 14th and Friday 18th.
Last weeks have really become a step forward for "parametric" architecture.
First two weeks proffesor Mauro Costa introduced the concept of Phylogenetic Maps through Grasshopper, the parametric plug-in for Rhino. Genotype vs fenotype; the relation between biology, informatic and architecture; results vs process; etc. where some of the concepts explained during his lectures. Grasshopper allows us to introduce high mathematic components into our modeling, as well as stablishing relations between the paramethers that defines the projects.
Then, in the following week, Ernesto Bueno focused his workshop into RhinoScript. RhinoScript lets you edit code and programm using VisualBasic inside of Rhinoceros, allowing recurrent tasks, optimiced processes and powerful emergence techniques.
Prof. Dennis Dollens proposal for this year's workshop started with the idea of projecting a bridge focusing in morphology and natural systems. At the end of the workshop, three different kinds of bridge structures where built. Those bridges took advantage of blending surfaces, repetition and aggregation of components for gaining strength, and elastic structures.
It has been a great experience for students and teachers. Thank you everyone!
Today we had a great time during the last correction of Alberto T. Estévez Studio. As a honour guest, Dennis Dollens, who will be teaching next week workshop. But before that happens, Affonso Orciuoli y Pablo Baquero will give us a lecture tomorrow morning (open assitance) about 3D fabrication (CNC, laser, 3Dprinter...). Things begin to grow faster and faster at the master.
Coming soon: project images.
First two weeks have ended with this lectures: Alberto T. Estévez (architect), "Biodigital Architecture - Genetic Architectures" Judith Urbano (art historian), "Sources, Gaudí/Organicism" and "Dalí/Surrealism" Josep Corcó (philosopher), "The Emergent Character of Life" Agusti Fontarnau (genetician) "Genetic Fundamentals I"
On the other hand, students have begun their first test in Biodigital Architecture at Alberto T. Estévez's Studio: "Barcelona Island". They look very promising!
"Programed Geometry: computing and architecture in the information age" In the fourth week will begin the digital fabrication period by Affonso Orciuoli. Take a look to the lectures and workshops relate. The lectures are open, so anybody in Barcelona can come to say hello and take a look.

Bienvenidos!
The Biodigital Architecture Stand, made up of panels digitally produced with the CNC, brings different images and models -3D Z·printer produced- from the master's students of previous editions.
